TAMPA Juan Samuel Jersey , Fla. (AP) — Rehabbing Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia will open the regular season on the 25-man roster so he can serve a five-game suspension stemming from last season before being placed on the injured list.Sabathia, retiring after the season, is expected to miss the first two or three turns through the rotation as he recovers from an offseason that included knee surgery and the insertion of a stent after a blockage was found in an artery from his heart. The Yankees will be short-handed for three games with Baltimore and a pair against Detroit while Sabathia serves the suspension for hitting Tampa Bay’s Jesus Sucre with a pitch in his last regular season start of 2018.Jonathan Loaisiga was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilke-Barre on Saturday but will be recalled for the sixth game on April 3 against the Tigers. Loaisiga is expected to start the game or enter after a reliever serves as an opener.“We’re getting him ready to start,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Whether we decide to do something with the opener, we’ll see where we are at that point in the season.”Luis Cessa and Domingo German, who both competed for open rotation spots with Loaisiga, will be on the opening day roster.Boone said German will likely be the fourth starter, while Cessa will be a long reliever.“That’s also something that’s fluid,” Boone said. “They’re all built up. That will be kind of week-by-week, rotation-by-rotation kind of thing.”Gio Gonzalez, a two-time All-Star signed to a minor league contract this week for rotation depth, allowed five runs and four hits over two innings in a 7-3 loss Saturday to the Toronto Blue Jays.“Maybe a tick off,” Gonzalez said. “A little more seasoning and I think I’ll be right where I want to be.”Yankees ace Luis Severino is sidelined by right shoulder inflammation and will not be available until May at the earliest.Opening day starter Masahiro Tanaka heads a rotation that includes James Paxton and J.A. Happ.Tanaka gave up a hit and struck out three in two scoreless innings Saturday during his final tuneup before facing the Orioles on Thursday. It will be his fourth opening day assignment, the most by a Japanese-born pitcher in major league history.“I’m ready,” Tanaka said.TRAINER’S ROOM1B Greg Bird (right elbow swelling) was in the original lineup Saturday but Boone decided not to play him until Sunday. Bird was hit by a pitch Wednesday, and Boone wanted to give him one more day to bring down inflammation. … Severino played catch for the third time in four days and increased his throwing distance from 60 to 90 feet. Instead of trying to figure out what we need to know about them ourselves, we thought it would be a good idea to ask our friends at our neighbors here at SBNation to help catch us up.We asked James Attwood of AZ SnakePit to answer a few questions for us about the upcoming Arizona Diamondbacks season. You’ll find his answers below, edited for length and clarity. What went right for the Diamondbacks in 2018? What, ultimately, went wrong? After a disappointing exit from the playoffs at the hands of the Dodgers in 2017, the Diamondbacks spent the vast majority atop the NL West in 2019, even holding the best record in the majors for a few days in the beginning of May. Sadly, this success came by riding those who were performing well to the point of exhaustion. Between injuries and fatigue, the Diamondbacks were doomed by their lack of depth. is still trying to compete. The desire to try and compete in 2019 is a big part of the reason the Diamondbacks chose the particular trade deal they did with the Cardinals. If they were in a full-on rebuild, the Texas Rangers’ offer would have made much more sense. The team has also picked up Wilmer Flores and Adam Jones to help contribute this season. That said, it would naive to think the Diamondbacks are not still focused as much on 2021 as they are on 2019. Mike Hazen was given a mandate at the start of the offseason. Get cheaper, get better, and do it all without trading from the future. The team is in the initial stages of a soft rebuild. They are taking that (from a fan’s perspective) dreaded middle approach, neither committing to a full rebuild, not going all-in. This greatly increases the team’s chances of spending the entire season mired in mediocrity, hovering just below or at the .500 mark. The consensus seems to be that the Arizona farm system is somewhere in the lower half of the league. What’s the current state of the farm system and what will it take to build it up?The bad news is that the Diamondbacks’ farm system is a mess. The good news is that it is no longer a complete dumpster fire, like it was last season. There are only two position players in the system that profile as true high-impact players. Unfortunately, they are both still at least two seasons away from making that impact. The pitching looks a little better Robin Roberts Jersey , but only barely. After the aforementioned Duplantier, Widener, and Clarke, it could be argued the team has no starting prospects above A+ ball. The team needs to do two things in order to improve on this. First, they need to continue to resist trading from what is left of the farm. Second, they need to figure out how to draft, especially in the first three rounds. The Diamondbacks have not had a strong draft since 2009 and it is killing them. The few good names they have picked up since then have all been moved, and there have not been enough of those anyway. This June, the Diamondbacks have seven of the top 80 selections, including two in the first round and two in the following round. If ever there was a time and a way to rehabilitate the Arizona farm system, the upcoming draft is it. BUt the key is, they have to get it right, something they have not yet demonstrated they know how to do.Prediction time: will Zack Greinke finish his current contract in a Diamondbacks uniform? While I would like to see that happen, I suspect that he will not. He may or may not get traded at the deadline this season. It might even take another full year. However, if he is able to remain healthy and productive, the deeper into the contract he gets, the more teams will be willing to absorb the financial hit. If he is still a 4 WAR pitcher with only one year left on his deal, it is difficult to see the Diamondbacks not finding numerous suitors. That could all change of course Tug McGraw Jersey , if the team finds a way to become competitive while he is still on the roster. If some of the current players bounce back and some of the debuts turn in the sorts of performances that are hoped for out of them, then it becomes much more difficult to trade Greinke, as replacing him will be nearly impossible. I honestly feel it is 50/50 if he finishes out his contract in an Arizona uniform. What do you think is a realistic best case scenario for the D-backs this year? What’s the worst case scenario? What would a successful season look like for the D-backs?I think the realistic best-case scenario for Arizona is to make a push late and to finish at .500. I honestly think the worst-case scenario is that they spend the entire season right at .500, always just on the edges of competing. This makes the team moving higher-priced MLB talent for younger talent with more years of control a difficult proposition. It also makes it hard for the team to start turning over the team to its internal prospects. At the same time, it puts the team in a position to get a middling draft pick at best, while wasting another season of control of the likes of Robbie Ray, Jake Lamb, and Zack Greinke. What will be the best part of watching the D-backs this year? Or, put another way, why should the casual fan (who’s not scoreboard watching) watch a D-backs game this season? This is going to depend entirely on which team shows up. Honestly, the sooner the prospects start arriving, the more likely it is that there will be something special to watch. The one big exception to this could be Robbie Ray. Even in poor seasons, like 2004, fans still tuned in to Diamondbacks games to watch Randy Johnson pitch. Robbie Ray could be the kind of pitcher that people actually tune in to watch. Or, his curve resembles the flatter one he had early last season, and then he becomes a non-factor and fans across the country are waiting on prospect arrivals.

Now is when all those roster protection decisions come home to roost."We wrap up the Winter Meeting News http://www.diamondbacksfanproshop.com/authentic-zack-greinke-jersey , where Billy Eppler will soon come home the conquering hero with Forrest Snow, Matt Ramsey, Dustin Garneau, Wilfredo Tovar, Peter Bourjos, Jarrett Parker and Cesar Puello added to Tempe, and Kaleb Cowart dumped moved to Seattle. I15 is being covered with roses and palm fronds as I write this. But the biggie deal from the Winter Meets would be the signing late yesterday of Justin Bour. One-year deal. Think of him as the left-handed version of Albert Pujols at 10 cents on the dollar. Seriously. They are both 1B, and compare their 2018 totals. One had 20 HRs across a slash line of .245/.289/.411 with an OPS of .700. The other was 20 HRs and .227/.341/.404 with an OPS of .746. If you didn’t read Rick Souddress’ review last night, would you know which one was Bour?On the upside, having 3 first basemen will sure come in handy if Ausmus is big on The Shift. Or maybe we could use 3 DH’s pre game, for pitcher, catcher, 2B.But before we get to Links, we have the Rule 5 Draft. Today is the day. There are intriguing names that might get involved. Here is what it all means. While we wait for the twitter updates on draft results, sip on these Vegas-Wrap-HaloLinks:A Little Bit Of Angels NewsI am pretty sure that this is the same link I have used each December for the past 4 or 5 now, but Albert Pujols is progressing fine with rehab from his season-ending surgery (surger-IES, in this case this year) and his strong work ethic has him on track for ST............Fortunately, there is a new sheriff in town, and all that work ethic may not matter..........In the context of Albert, are you one who throws out the term “sunk cost” a lot? If you are, or if you are the other kind of person who cringes whenever you read the term being thrown about, go read this...........Billy Eppler has a vision that continuing to grow and improve the LAA farm system is a good plan. Well, that sounds good. I like that. It’s better than planning to do the opposite. But that is not the message here. The message here is that Eppler will not be adding to the 25-man by decrementing from the 40-man, or below that. So additions to the 25-man can only come via FA signings. Which come at whatever it is that Arte has told Eppler he can afford. And we all know what it is that impacts payroll affordability............All that said, it was said on purpose. It tees up the more recent article, wherein Alden Gonzalez is a believer..........If we shrink the base paths to only 30 feet, Jo Adell is gonna kill it..........Derek Jeter just poached out of our Salt Lake City coaching staff..........Everywhere In BaseballChampionships Are Overrated. That’s a provocative title Jake Lamb Jersey , but the article is a brilliant take down of MFY fan base entitlement. The very best paragraph, IMHO, begins with: “Winning championships is, obviously, the goal of every sports team, but you are not a sports team. You are a fan.” The whole article is excellent, but that paragraph is brilliant. Well, the next one is good, too. I wish I had written that............Somebody did not get the memo from New York. Craig Counsell, Brewers manager, thinks banning the shift would be stupid. He actually finds the shift strategically fun. And don’t forget, Counsell was a position fielder, and a batter, as well as being a manager..........Unlike, say, a Tim Dahlberg of AP who is just a writer, and who hates the shift. Dahlberg is a BBWAA HoF voter, so he is probably drooling for his chance to punch David Ortiz’ ticket..........Tony La Russa sat on that very small committee that dumped Harold Baines in the Hall of Fame. he was one of the Chosen 3. So his was 33.333% of the voting power all by himself. And that outcome is taking a bath. It’s a blood bath, actually. Well, the last thing that Tony La Russa likes to hear is anybody telling him his opinion is shit...........Sorry, but tech will not take over human scouting until the entire nation is smothered in Trackman and StatCast systems............If you get MLB Network, maybe they will replay this. It was announced online too late for yesterday’s Links. “Eck: A Story of Saving” is a documentary about the baseball life and struggles of Dennis Eckersley. As the text in the link states, Eck pretty much helped invent the modern role of Closer..........Just a small touch of baseball history, of no practical meaning to any of us I am sure. Strictly human interest. But the Frick Award for Broadcasting will put into the HoF one Al Helfer, who did national radio broadcasts back in the 50’s. I really struggle to put into proper perspective what that contribution really means to the sport we enjoy today. We have such a glut of information at our disposal that we filter out 95% of it and throw that all away, just to focus on the most delicious parts of that last 5%. But if 100% of everything you got to know about baseball was less than 1% of that 5%, would you still be a fan? In Helfer’s time that was the world of MLB http://www.diamondbacksfanproshop.com/authentic-zack-greinke-jersey , and guys like Helfer had the skill to turn out larger numbers of more passionate baseball fans than we have today. It’s amazing, once you wrap your head around it..........Holy balls! Stop the presses!! The big news in baseball is NOT what’s been happening in Las Vegas. No! It’s that the MF Red Sox are going to flip two players in their batting order when the season opens next year!!..........This, I think, is a mistake. The title is the link, and tells all. “Tim Neverett leaves WEEI’s Red Sox broadcasts amidst report they wanted to turn game broadcasts into something ‘more like a talk show’ “.....I say it’s a mistake for a reason. For a brief period, my oldest son and I would sit together and watch ballgames on TV, and soon enough our chatter would take over. One thing would lead to another and we would eventually be running a comedy panel discussion about the events unfolding on TV. My son is extremely funny. On stage live performance improv for years level of funny. I had the thought of running live podcasts as an alt audio to televised games. It was Rev who pointed out that streaming podcasts quickly fall behind real time game action, so I shut it down. But the premise remains true. A format Oakland has such a great relationship with their sports franchises..........Hot StoveThat plinking noise heard across the nation yesterday would be the Red Sox competitive window taking it’s first crack. Already spending at a pace that overwhelms everybody else, and with a farm system that is gutted, they will have young superstars coming into major pay upgrades over the next few years and they have to start shedding someplace. The first names to be opened up for movement are Xander Bogaerts, Rick Porcello and Jackie Bradley, Jr. (not counting Craig Kimbrel, who is already gone)............The Yankees are signing J.A. Happ.....no they are not....yes they are close.....Whatever............What the hell are the Reds doing?.....Are they really going after A.J. Pollock And Dallas Keuchel?.....And are they really going after R.T. Realmuto, too?..........The Rays are winning the Tier 2 Charlie Morton bidding war. The Rays are lined up to sign him. Which could be fun, since this is the team that just declared they would be sticking to the Opener strategy. Maybe not so much...........In a catastrophic turn of events, holding the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas might have had the effect of baseball people actually having to talk to other baseball people face-to-face. Cell phone service has been horrid, and the casino tech to disrupt cheaters might be the culprit..........Surely it doesn’t really matter to we LAA fans. But in case you still have visions of sugar plans and Bryce Harper dancing in your head, here is a gentle reminder that, as a California-based franchise, we are at a severe disadvantage..........The Duffle BagEverybody in baseball does flow charts now. Never forget that they were invented here. (The very first one....My personal fave.....The most commonly remembered......That membership fave updated.)............LAD manager Dave Roberts is delighted to learn of the Cardinals’ fortune..........maybe we should have dumped a hundred or so Capuchin monkeys into the casinos this week, just to represent.......... SAN FRANCISCO — A team that’s returning home encounters a team that’s starting to feel right at home when the San Francisco Giants host the Texas Rangers in a three-game interleague series beginning Friday night. The Giants got a chance to enjoy one of baseball’s longest flights — New York to San Francisco — after riding Madison Bumgarner’s gem to a 3-1 victory over the Mets in Thursday’s series finale. The National League West’s fourth-place team (63-66) lost six of eight to cap a 10-game trip, but still believes there’s enough time to play catch-up in the crowded race for wild-card spots in the NL.Article continues below ...“I would like to squeak our way in there,” said Bumgarner, who will not pitch in the Texas series. “Obviously, that’s going to be tough for us. We gotta have a lot of things go our way and a lot of things not go their way. So I know the odds are slim.”The Giants will get a head-to-head shot at most of the competition in the wild-card race in the final 33 games of the season. They’ll face the Arizona Diamondbacks (71-56), the current NL West leaders, on their current homestand Jeff Mathis Jersey , sandwiched between a total of six games against the Rangers and Mets.“Anything can happen,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy insisted. “You have to look at some clubs. They’ve fought their way back in it. One club, in particular, the (St. Louis) Cardinals, they got hot and look where they’re at (71-57). Anything can happen. We need to win games and get on a roll and get some confidence going.”The Giants are expected to reinstate right-hander Dereck Rodriguez (6-1, 2.25) from the disabled list to open the homestand. The Arlington, Texas, native, son of former Rangers standout Ivan Rodriguez, has never faced Texas. The 26-year-old has pitched brilliantly in interleague play, limiting the Oakland Athletics and Houston Astros to a total of six hits and one run in 13 1/3 innings, striking out 12 while going 1-0.The Rangers are scheduled to counter with right-hander Drew Hutchison (2-2, 5.71), who will be making his fourth start since signed by Texas earlier this month. He has never pitched against the Giants in his five-year, 96-game, 77-start career.Like the Giants, the Rangers enter the series on a high, having held off the A’s 4-2 in the finale of a three-game series in Oakland on Wednesday. As opposed to the Giants, they will be well rested, getting a rare opportunity to take a full day off on the road Thursday without changing hotels, having remained in the San Francisco Bay Area for both series. The Rangers believe they’ve found a closer in right-hander Jose Leclerc, who got the better of nemesis Khris Davis in a game-saving situation in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s win.“I thought it was a really nice confidence boost for him,” Rangers manager Jeff Banister said of Leclerc, who struck out Davis as the potential tying run after the slugger had hit nine earlier homers against Texas this season. “Credit to Jose. One thing that I know: It will go a long ways moving forward with him.”

ANAHEIM Larry Doby Jersey , Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani could have shut it down already. He could have wrapped up his singular rookie season with the Los Angeles Angels and proceeded straight to the Tommy John surgery looming for him next week.Instead, Ohtani is still slugging away in the eighth inning of a sparsely attended night game in the final days of September between two teams that won’t get anywhere near the playoffs this year.He is facing Texas’ Chris Martin, his teammate last season in Japan. Ohtani pounces on a pitch up in the zone and drives it the opposite way, flashing the all-fields power that still stuns. His shoot hits the top of the left field wall and bounds into the bullpen. The tiebreaking homer is his 22nd of the year, matching his best pro total with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters.“You’ve seen him get progressively better as the season has gone on,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “This experience is invaluable to him — to be able to finish strong, see as much pitching as he can, log it and be ready for next year to swing the bat.”Ohtani’s patient, almost ascetic approach to baseball has been evident ever since he agreed to join the Angels last winter. In doing so, he passed up untold millions that he could have made by waiting a couple of years in Japan, instead hurrying stateside to begin the long process of mastering the big leagues as a pitcher and a hitter. So it was no surprise to his teammates and coaches when he decided to keep hitting until October, even after he realized his pitching elbow would require surgery . It’s also no surprise that he plans to hit throughout next season without giving up on his long-term plan to be a two-way player. The 24-year-old is focused on the long view, but every small step along the path is vital.“I think the way I finish the season is really important to me, whether it’s good or bad,” Ohtani said. “Because I know what to work on during the offseason. This time I was able to finish strong, so it was a really good feeling.”Ohtani heads into the Angels’ final three games of 2018 batting .283 with 22 homers Bob Feller Jersey , 59 RBIs and a .930 OPS in just 355 plate appearances. Before he felt pain in his pitching elbow in early June, he had 63 strikeouts and a 3.31 ERA in just 10 starts of tantalizing quality.Despite the arm injury that ended his pitching efforts and kept him from batting for most of June, Ohtani is a top contender for the AL Rookie of the Year award. Voters must evaluate Ohtani’s unique talents next to the more conventional hitting prowess of New York Yankees sluggers Miguel Andujar and Gleyber Torres.Ohtani’s persistence has proven to be one of his greatest strengths — and that isn’t always the case with athletes of his prodigious gifts. When he took a two-month break from pitching, he struggled at the plate to start July — but then batted .328 in August with six homers and 18 RBIs. After his return to the mound in early September went poorly and left him facing the inevitability of Tommy John, Ohtani improbably racked up four homers and 10 RBIs in his first four games back at the plate. The Angels attribute that resilience to Ohtani’s mental toughness, which is a key complement to his unique skills.“He’s got a great makeup,” Scioscia said. “I think he understands the separation of pitching and hitting. He’s able to take that batting helmet off and put that pitcher’s cap on and go pitch when he’s going to pitch, and when he’s hitting, he’s focused on hitting. He just wants to play baseball, whatever he can do. So I know he’s looking forward to pitching, but I think it’s an easy sideways step for him to become just a hitter. He just loves to play the game.”Away from the field, Ohtani appears to be settled smoothly in Orange County with his new club. While he doesn’t speak in public without Ippei Mazuhara, his translator and constant companion at Angel Stadium, he clearly understands much more English than he did in April — and more Spanish, as evidenced in his spirited recent rendition of “Despacito” on the team bus.Ohtani is finishing this season batting cleanup as the Angels’ designated hitter, and he’s likely to resume that role in 2019. While the Angels remain firmly committed to supporting Ohtani’s two-way skills http://www.indiansfanproshop.com/authentic-b.j.-upton-jersey , everyone around the club is eager to see what Ohtani can accomplish while he’s largely focused on just one side of his two-way game.“The thing about Shohei is he’s got the potential to do it all, and he’s committed to getting there,” Scioscia said. “It’s not often you see that combination in a guy, and he’s got it all.” The best part is that they might not be finished."WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections Farmers onlyFeaturesPlayoffsHistory/Hall of FameOff-seasonThe Cincinnati Reds have made all the right moves this offseasonNew,196commentsThe best part is that they might not be finished.ESTShareTweetShareShareThe Cincinnati Reds have made all the right moves this offseasonGary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY SportsOn December 11, 2014, the Cincinnati Reds officially started to rebuild. Unable to contend for another spot in the playoffs in the previous season, they decided to start making moves. They made two trades that day, sending Alfredo Simon to Detroit for Eugenio Suarez and trading Mat Latos away to Miami for Anthony DeSclafani. Seven months later, they sent Johnny Cueto to the Royals and Mike Leake to the Giants and The Rebuild became The Reboot. In the four seasons since the Latos and Simon trades, they have won no-more than 68 games in a given year and have finished last in the National League Central each year. Finally, after 5 straight losing seasons, the front office promised that they were going to improve the team. They’ve held up on that promise so far, and they’ve done it by making all of the right moves. When the Reds hired manager David Bell back in October, the two promises made by owner Bob Castellini were that the Reds would have a record payroll and that they would “Get the Pitching.” With no other details than those two statements, it was hard to imagine what the Reds had planned for the offseason and how much it was going to cost. Dallas Keuchel was (and still is) the top free agent pitcher on the market and the Cleveland Indians were possibly shopping Corey Kluber or Trevor Bauer. Would the Reds go all-in by signing a former Cy Young winner to a big contract or trade away some of their best prospects for a Corey Kluber type? While that question has yet to be answered Joe Carter Jersey , and looks more and more likely that answer is a “no”, they have made some impressive moves to improve their starting rotation. The first move of the offseason happened in December, as the Reds acquired Tanner Roark from the Washington Nationals. Roark, while an improvement to the rotation, wasn’t exactly what we all thought when we first heard “Get the Pitching,” but it was a decent acquisition anyway. Next came the blockbuster. The Reds acquired Yasiel Puig, Alex Wood, Matt Kemp, and Kyle Farmer from the Dodgers for Homer Bailey and two minor leaguers. The Reds made another improvement to the starting rotation in Wood, added one of the most electric players in baseball in Puig, and got Homer Bailey’s massive contract off the books. Now we’re talking. Lastly, they acquired Sonny Gray from the Yankees (and effectively signed him to a very reasonable 4-year, $38 million extension with a year-5 option) for Shed Long and a competitive balance pick in the 2019 draft. Not only did the Reds come through on their promise to spend money and improve their starting rotation, they did it at a time when seemingly nobody else is trying to make these improvements. Seriously. February is only a few days away and two of the top five players in baseball still remain unsigned along with the best relief pitcher in baseball and the 2015 American League Cy Young winner. While that brings along a different conversation for a different day, it still shows how the Reds have gone against what most of the league has been doing this offseason and have made themselves competitive with the rest of the division in the process. The upside to all of these moves is that they have done them without a massive overpay and have dealt from positions of depth, making a solid improvement to the team without giving up their top prospects. While it would have been great to see a guy like Shed Long in a Reds uniform at 2B in the near future http://www.indiansfanproshop.com/authentic-b.j.-upton-jersey , he is exactly the type of prospect you need to deal to make a serious improvement given the plethora of other middle-infield options. Jeter Downs and Josiah Gray might become solid major league players, but the likelihood of those two making an impact on the immediate future of the Reds is slim-to-none, so it was okay to see them go. They have also kept the door open for Nick Senzel to get plenty of meaningful plate appearances this year, most likely in center field, holding down the fort until Taylor Trammell makes his way up in 2020 or 2021. All of that being said, there is still work to be done. They probably need to add another bullpen arm before the season and it wouldn’t hurt to add a true center fielder. I realize that statement comes immediately after saying that Nick Senzel could be patrolling center field, but the truth is that they still don’t know if they have Billy Hamilton’s replacement since Senzel has yet to play the position. The Reds will also have decisions to make about a lot of players, either at the trade deadline or next winter. All of the new acquisitions outside of Sonny Gray, including Scooter Gennett, are in the final year of their contracts. They will have possible trades to evaluate if they aren’t competitive and will have to decide who to extend a qualifying offer after the season. While they need to get the most out of these players on the field in 2019, what they get from them before they move on is just as important. This has been the most exciting offseason as a Reds fan since 2012. They have finally put forth the effort to field a competitive team and end this rebuild. While they still have an uphill climb to compete in a division as tough as the NL Central, it’s relieving to know that they have a fighting chance. These moves may not make a difference in how they finish in the division, but at least they finally tried.

A few members of the bullpen that were expected to hold significant roles this season, are continuing to struggle. Richard Bleier and Miguel Castro both got roughed up again against the Athletics on Tuesday night. They each now have season ERA’s north of 11.On top of that, Alex Cobb and Nate Karns are headed to the IL. Cobb has made just one start so far, but he looked pretty darn good. Karns has made a few appearances and has allowed just one run to this point. Those two will be replaced, for the moment, by Evan Phillips and Josh Rogers. This feels like it could begin the never-ending shuttle between Norfolk and Baltimore in order to plug holes in the pitching staff throughout the season. Phillips threw three innings on Tuesday. Could he be optioned to bring up yet another fresh arm? Rogers is expected to backup Dan Straily today and could be counted on for multiple innings as well. That may mean he gets sent back down after just one appearance. It was inevitable that this was going to happen at some point in the summer. International money, minor prospect Yordi Rosario heading back to Pirates"Soria. At least until Bryce Harper and/or Manny Machado are in tow, consider these types of “lukewarm water” deals to be the norm for GM Rick Hahn. Without knowing whether he can add the 25 (!) or so wins necessary to contend in the AL Central, assets acquired will need to be short-term, and flippable. Hahn is nibbling at a slice of pizza, rather than devouring the whole pie.Later on on Tuesday afternoon, Hahn spoke to reporters in Las Vegas. Some of his thoughts, as tweeted by Scott Merkin: “Going back to his Yankees days [the White Sox were interested in Nova]. There was a time six or seven years ago when he was pretty high up on some lists that we were part of, some pretty deep conversations with [the Yankees] a while back. As we entered this offseason http://www.nationalsfanproshop.com/authentic-matt-adams-jersey , he was certainly on the list, from the start, of guys who could conceivably fit this role. “[Signing Nova] doesn’t preclude us from going out and continuing to add to the rotation if we find the right fit. But this was an important get in terms of helping stabilize the rotation, fill up some innings, and take some pressure off the young guys.”Nova will be 32 this season, and while many are regarding him as a replacement for James Shields, Nova’s floor seems far higher than one of the worst starters in White Sox history. Nova qualifies as an innings-eater — such as one is in today’s game — having thrown at least 160 innings in each of the past three seasons. He was 9-9 in 2018, with a 4.19 ERA and 4.57 FIP. Not a power pitcher, nor a big strikeouts guy, Nova pitches to contact. His control, which should keep him at no more than two walks per nine innings, will stand out on a White Sox staff known for its wildness. Regarding Nova pitching to contact Joe Blanton Jersey , Daryl Van Schouwen quoted Hahn on Tuesday afternoon: “Sometimes you have to let the guys behind you do the work. Strikeouts are fascist, I’ve heard. Ground balls [are] more democratic.”Per the White Sox release, Nova’s average of 1.75 walks per 9.0 IP over the past three seasons ranks fifth in the majors, behind only Josh Tomlin (1.03), Clayton Kershaw (1.30), Mike Leake (1.66) and Bartolo Col贸n (1.66). The 19-year-old Rosario was 1-4 with a 2.57 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 14 games (11 starts) last season between the DSL and AZL White Sox. In his exhaustive Deep Dive series, whisoxman20051917 profiled the righthander favorably:Pending transactions still to come, Nova slots in as the No. 3 starter and fills one of the two gaping holes in the rotation.Perhaps not the best news for Jordan Stephens, but then, it could always be worse: He could be the “minor prospect” headed back to Pittsburgh.

Cox was the brother-in-law of Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout. The family did not reveal a cause of death in its statement regarding Cox's death:"Early this morning our families lost a phenomenal human being. Aaron Cox was a tremendous son, brother, and brother-in-law. He had a deep love for his family, and a passionate dedication and commitment to his friends. As our families grieve together, we will also celebrate the memories, the laughter, and the love we each shared with Aaron in the short time we had him."He will forever be at the forefront in the hearts and minds of the Cox and Trout families. We will rely on the love and strength of God first and foremost during this difficult and challenging time, as well as our dear family and friends. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers, and our Lord and Savior for His precious gift of Aaron Joseph."The Angels also released a statement:Angels AngelsAaron will always have a special place in the hearts of those within the organization.Cox was the brother of Trout's wife, Jessica. The former relief pitcher, who retired Aug. 6 http://www.chicagocubsteamshop.com/authentic-david-ross-jersey , went 7-3 in his minor league career with a 3.64 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 12 saves and 96 strikeouts in 101.1 innings across 68 appearances. He had been part of the Angels farm system since the team drafted him in the 19th round in 2015. MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Colorado Rockies pitcher Jon Gray surprised his wife by getting his hair cut in a Mohawk style. After Friday’s efficient outing, the right-hander will likely keep it trimmed.Gray retired all nine Oakland Athletics batters he faced on 30 pitches at Hohokam Stadium in his second spring start. He struck out three.“It felt efficient, it felt like I was getting strike one, attacking the zone, not picking around the zone so much,” Gray said. “I was just going after guys and throwing every pitch for strikes. My defense was great behind me and saved a couple hits. It made it really clean.”Gray has been the Rockies’ opening day starter the past two years and wouldn’t mind getting the call this season when Colorado opens against the Miami Marlins on March 28. He went 12-9 with a 5.12 ERA in 31 starts last year. Rockies manager Bud Black may consider Kyle Freeland (17-7, 2.85 ERA) or German Marquez (14-11, 3.77 ERA) as well.“I would love to (start opening day) but we’ve got a really good group of guys,” Gray said. “After the years Freeland and Marquez had last year Jose Quintana Jersey , I’m hoping everybody brings their ‘A’ game this year and I know we’ll finish well in the end.”It worked last season as the Rockies reached the postseason for the second consecutive year, securing a wild-card berth. The Rockies beat the Chicago Cubs in the wild-card game, but lost to the Milwaukee Brewers in the Division Series.Gray said the Rockies are motivated this season.“It’s an unspoken thing,” he said. “It’s what all of us expect and probably what we expect of each other. I don’t have to be like, ‘Hey, I wonder if everyone is thinking the same thing I am this year’ because we’re right there. That’s all we’ve been thinking about the whole offseason. It’s that time of the year, we’re excited to play, get out there and see what we’ve got.”So, what about his hair? Gray usually has long, blonde hair sticking out from under his cap. In 2017, he had eight inches cut to donate to “Locks of Love”, a public nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children who have medical long-term hair loss. This time http://www.chicagocubsteamshop.com/authentic-david-ross-jersey , Gray’s hair wasn’t long enough to donate, but it was long enough to force him to get a trim a few days ago. However, that wasn’t good enough.“It didn’t look the way I thought it would so I said, ‘You know what, let’s go get another one,'” Gray said. “Let’s take it a little bit shorter, we’ll do a mohawk and let it ride out a little bit. Sure enough, today I had a good game so it’s going to stay, it’s going to stay for a little bit.”NOTES: Manager Bud Black was not with the team but in San Diego to be with his daughter for the arrival of his first grandchild. Bench coach Mike Redmond was the acting manager against the Athletics.

BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox manager Alex Cora didn’t want his lefties to feel left out.Even as Los Angeles loaded its lineup with right-handed batters to face Boston lefty Chris Sale Jose Quintana Jersey , Cora stayed with Andrew Benintendi and Rafael Devers against left-handed Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday night.Benintendi responded with four hits — going 3 for 3 against the three-time NL Cy Young Award winner — and three runs. Devers drove in one of them to lead the Red Sox to an 8-4 victory in a blustery Series opener.“We’re facing a guy who’s one of the best of all time. And a lot of guys didn’t have a lot of experience off of him; the first time a lot of us have faced him. Didn’t really know what to expect,” Benintendi said. “We had a good game plan. We stuck to it.”Benintendi had one four-hit performance in the regular season but had never topped two in a postseason game during his career. The 24-year-old left fielder became just the second lefty ever to have three hits against Kershaw in a game.“He hangs in there with lefties,” Cora said. “We do feel that he’s a good hitter against them. When he’s using the whole field, he becomes very dangerous.”Benintendi had an RBI single and came around to score in the first, singled again in the third and singled a third time to chase Kershaw with nobody out in the fifth before scoring to give Boston a 5-3 lead.In the seventh, Benintendi sliced a double that handcuffed charging left fielder Joc Pederson and scored on Eduardo Nunez’s pinch-hit homer.“He got lucky, too,” Cora said. “Twice, probably.”Although Kershaw is tough on everybody, he’s not that much better against lefties (who have a .195 batting average against him over his career) than righties (.211). So Cora decided to stick with left-handed regulars Benintendi and Jackie Bradley Jr., as well as Devers, who has platooned with Nunez.Leaving Nunez on the bench was a tough call for the manager, requiring a talk with the 31-year-old third baseman who had never played in the World Series before and had started against every lefty in the playoffs so far.“We felt Raffi was going to hang in there with Kershaw, and having (Nunez) on the bench, it was going to pay off http://www.chicagocubsteamshop.com/authentic-david-ross-jersey ,” Cora said. “So keeping him in the dugout and out of the lineup was going to probably give us a chance to win the game. And it worked out.“He was prepared. He wasn’t upset, actually, that he wasn’t playing. I told him, ‘Be ready, man. You might have a big at-bat tonight and do your thing.’ And he did.”Kershaw and Sale were both chased in the fifth inning. With righty Pedro Baez on the mound in the seventh, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts brought in lefty Alex Wood to face Devers.Cora countered with Nunez, and he hit a low breaking pitch into the first row of the Green Monster seats to give Boston an 8-4 lead.“That was the plan and we did it,” Nunez said. “I think he makes great moves. He watches a lot of video. He’s very smart. I think that he’s the reason we’re here. Because every move we make, it’s for a reason, and it’s a good reason.” SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nothing fazed Reyes Moronta of the San Francisco Giants in his season debut Saturday night. Not Manny Machado, not Fernando Tatis Jr., not the San Diego Padres complaining about the color of his glove, forcing him to switch to another one.Relying on a filthy slider, Moronta struck out five in two innings of lights-out relief work and the Giants beat the Padres 3-2 for their first victory this season.“Man, what a game-saving effort Dustin Pedroia Jersey ,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “I mean, I put him in a tough situation there, man on second, nobody out, with who he had to face. His two great innings won the game for us.”San Francisco took a 3-0 lead in the sixth, highlighted by Yangervis Solarte’s double. Giants starter Dereck Rodriguez (1-0) faltered in the bottom of the inning, allowing hits to the first two batters before Travis Bergen came on and allowed Eric Hosmer’s two-run double.Bochy then summoned Moronta, who struck out Machado, Wil Myers and Hunter Renfroe. Moronta, a 5-foot-8, 257-pound righty, struck out two more in the seventh, including prized rookie Tatis, to strand Greg Garcia after a pinch-hit double in his Padres debut.Moronta had a habit last year of walking his first batter. But he struck out Machado on five pitches, including four sliders.“I don’t think about the batter Babe Ruth Jersey ,” Moronta said through a translator. “My main concern is just go out there, do my job, concentrating on throwing strikes and really not worry about the situation of the game.”After Moronta struck out Machado, San Diego’s $300 million slugger, the Padres complained about his light gray glove, and he was forced to switch to another one.“That really doesn’t bother me. They can complain about the color of my glove. It’s not going to faze me a bit,” he said. “I’m just out there trying to do my job.”Asked if he’d be available for Sunday’s series finale, he said: “I’m always ready. This year I came ready to pitch whenever they need me. It doesn’t matter the situation.”The Giants were at risk of going 0-3 for the first time since 2012, when they won their second of three World Series in five seasons under Bochy, who is retiring after this season. The Padres were denied their first 3-0 start since 1984, the season they went to their first World Series, with Bochy as a backup catcher.Rodriguez allowed two runs and four hits in five-plus innings, struck out two and walked none. Will Smith pitched a perfect ninth for his first save.Nick Margevicius (0-1) pitched five-plus innings of one-run ball in his major league debut for San Diego but was the hard-luck loser. He was making the jump from Class A.The 22-year-old Margevicius held the Giants scoreless on two hits until Steven Duggar singled leading off the sixth. He made way for Robert Stock, who allowed a double down the right-field line by Solarte, who played with the Padres from 2014 until being traded to Toronto before last season. He signed with San Francisco in February.Evan Longorgia singled in Solarte and the Giants added on with two outs when Joe Panik hit a bases-loaded http://www.redsoxproshops.com/authentic-dustin-pedroia-jersey , RBI single. Buster Posey was thrown out trying to score from second to end the inning.Margevicius allowed one run and three hits in five-plus innings, struck out five and walked none.“It was incredible,” Margevicius said. “It was everything you’ve dreamed of. It was pretty surreal for me. I would have liked to come away with a win, but I was very happy.”He hit two batters, including grazing Duggar across the nose leading off the game. Duggar was OK. He also hit Brandon Belt on the hand.“They just got away from me,” the pitcher said. “I wasn’t trying to go up and in, they just got away.”Manager Andy Green said Margevicius “was great. Really good first outing in the big leagues. Very composed, even though he hit a couple guys. He was well-prepared, very intelligent approach to the hitters. Outstanding first effort.”Margevicius was promoted earlier in the day and became the second player from the 2017 amateur draft to make is big league debut. He was the third straight young lefty to start for the Padres, following Eric Lauer (23) and Joey Lucchesi (25), both of whom made their big league debuts last year.Margevicius went 10-8 with a 3.60 ERA between Low-A Fort Wayne and High-A Lake Elsinore last year before making one postseason start with Double-A San Antonio.TRAINER’S ROOMGiants: Longoria fouled a ball off his calf and came out. He’ll get Sunday off.UP NEXTGiants: RHP Jeff Samardzija is scheduled to start the series finale Sunday. He’s trying to bounce back from an injury-marred season in which he went 1-5 with a 6.25 ERA in just 10 starts.Padres: RHP Chris Paddack, 23, is scheduled to make his big league debut. He went 7-3 with a 2.10 ERA between Class A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio as he bounced back from Tommy John surgery.

The Baltimore Orioles finished the 2018 season with a 47-115 record and 61 games standing between them and first place in the American League East. It didn't take them long to make personnel changes after such a disastrous showing.According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network Alan Trammell Jersey , the Orioles parted ways with general manager Dan Duquette on Wednesday. His report comes after Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic suggested the team was "expected" to let Duquette go while noting it fired manager Buck Showalter. ESPN.comnoted Duquette's contract only runs through the end of October, so he simply will not be re-signed.Duquette, 60, has enjoyed an extensivecareerin the major league ranks. He worked in scouting and player development with the Milwaukee Brewers, served as the assistant general manager and then general manager of the Montreal Expos, was the general manager of the Boston Red Sox and was the director of baseball operations for the Israel Baseball League before the Orioles hired him prior to the 2012 campaign.Baltimore made the playoffs in three of seven seasons under Duquette, advancing as far as the 2014 American League Championship Series. However http://www.tigersfanproshop.com/authentic-joe-jimenez-jersey , the team finished in last place in the AL East in each of the last two seasons.R.J. Andersonof CBS Sports pointed out Duquette was "known for having an analytical bent" but added, "whether or not Duquette still has the eye has improved upon his reputedly shaky communication skills up for debate."Despite the struggles of the past two seasons, Duquette at least put the Orioles in position for future success with a number of trades, including deals that sent out Manny Machado, Zach Britton and Kevin Gausman.Jonathan Mayoof MLB.com ranked teams that improved their farm systems the most at the non-waiver trade deadline on July 31 and had the Orioles atop the list.Duquette just won't be there to see the farm system eventually ascend to the major league level. Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesChicago White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech has been diagnosed with a torn UCL in his elbow, the team announced on Friday.Kopech will miss the entire 2019 season and is "expected to be ready for spring training in 2020."Tommy John surgery has been recommended for the 22-year-old, but plans have not been finalized since he is scheduled to receive a second opinion in the coming days."It sucks Lance Parrish Jersey ," Kopech said, according to MLB.com's Scott Merkin. The Los Angeles Angels might be out of the running for a playoff spot http://www.philliesfanproshop.com/authentic-pat-neshek-jersey , but they can certainly factor in the American League West race. The Angels open a three-game series against the AL West-leading Houston Astros on Friday night at Angel Stadium, the first of 10 games against the reigning World Series champions over the next month. The Astros (77-50) entered Thursday with a one-game lead over the Oakland A’s and a 5 1/2-game edge on the Seattle Mariners.Article continues below ...The Angels (63-65) have six games remaining against Oakland and four against Seattle, which is chasing the A’s for the final AL wild-card spot.Houston will send left-hander Dallas Keuchel to the mound in the series opener. Keuchel is 11-2 in his career against the Angels with a 3.41 ERA. He’s 25-23 against the rest of the AL West.He won his only start against the Angels this season, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning on July 20 in Anaheim before allowing one unearned run and two hits over 7 2/3 innings of the 3-1 win.He has won his past five decisions against Los Angeles overall with his last loss coming on Sept. 11, 2015 at Angel Stadium.Keuchel (9-10, 3.59 ERA) hasn’t been able to get his record over .500 this season, however. He had three chances after moving to 9-9 in an 8-3 win against the Mariners on Aug. 1, but had no decisions in his next two starts and then took the loss in a 7-1 defeat against the A’s on Saturday.Keuchel gave up five runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. Six of those hits were doubles.“They got in that momentum with really good at-bats and double after double after double,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch told MLB.com afterward. “He didn’t need to make perfect pitches, but he didn’t get the ball on the ground today the way he normally does.”The series will mark the return of Houston catcher Martin Maldonado to Anaheim. He was acquired from the Angels in a trade on July 26.Maldonado has three home runs in 16 games with the Astros after hitting five in 78 games with the Angels.Reports have also surfaced that Los Angeles outfielder Mike Trout could return Friday. Trout was on the 10-day disabled list with a sore right wrist when his brother-in-law, Aaron Cox, died on Aug. 15.Angels left-hander Andrew Heaney is also looking to get over .500 for the first time this season. He’s had six chances http://www.philliesfanproshop.com/authentic-pat-neshek-jersey , but is 0-3 with three no-decisions in those games. Most recently he missed an opportunity against the Texas Rangers, allowing six runs and 10 hits on Saturday and leaving after 5 2/3 innings with the score tied 6-6. The Angels went on to win 11-7.Heaney (7-7, 4.11 ERA) beat the Astros in his two starts this season, both times to get his record back to .500. Those are his only two decisions in four career starts against the Astros.Heaney will try to lift his teammates, who have dropped five of their past six games. In addition to being without Trout, left fielder Justin Upton has missed the past two games with a cut on his right index finger, forcing Angels manager Mike Scioscia to go with a younger, more inexperienced lineup.“We have some guys who are figuring it out as they play every day,” Scioscia told the Orange County Register following a 5-1 loss at the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday. “These guys need to play to figure stuff out.” The Seattle Mariners (65-50) begin a crucial divisional series with the World Series champion Houston Astros (73-42) on Thursday as solid road underdogs at the sportsbooks. The American League West-leading Astros have won two straight games, while the Mariners have lost two in a row, as they continue to chase the Oakland Athletics for the second and final AL wild-card spot. Why the Mariners can pay on the MLB linesSeattle may not be playing in desperation mode yet, but this is the perfect time to start getting hot in an effort to catch Oakland. The Mariners would love nothing more than to start this series off with a big victory, and they will have ace James Paxton (9-5, 3.51 ERA) on the mound looking to put together his third straight quality start since the MLB All-Star break. The 29-year-old has allowed a combined three runs and 11 hits in splitting his last two outings totaling 14 innings, walking one batter and striking out 15. More importantly, though, he is a perfect 3-0 versus Houston this season with a sparkling 0.87 ERA. Why the Astros can pay on the MLB linesThe Astros are well on their way to earning back-to-back division titles, and they rank first in baseball with a plus-202 run differential, even ahead of the MLB-leading Boston Red Sox. They have also dominated this matchup with Seattle recently, winning 12 of the past 15 meetings Clay Buchholz Jersey , according to the OddsShark MLB Database. The three losses all came against Paxton, but Justin Verlander (11-6, 2.19 ERA) has also been very good versus the Mariners over the previous three seasons. Michael Wyke/Associated PressWhile he has not faced them this year, the 35-year-old went 2-0 with a 1.82 ERA in six starts against them between 2015 and 2017, limiting them to a .215 batting average during that stretch.Smart betting pickSeattle appears to be a solid value play in this spot considering Paxton has been awesome versus Houston this season. This is arguably the biggest series of 2018 for the Mariners, who cannot afford to fall further behind in the race for a wild-card berth. The Astros are a great team, but look for them to stay winless against Paxton here. NEW YORK (AP) — Now that he’s staying with the New York Yankees Barry Bonds Jersey , J.A. Happ would like to see Manny Machado join him in the Bronx.“You get any kind of player like that on a team, that would be exciting,” the pitcher said Thursday, three days after finalizing a $34 million, two-year contract.Machado, one of the top free agents along with Bryce Harper this offseason, visited the Yankees on Wednesday. New York’s level of interest in is unclear, though the Yankees say they hope to add an infielder while shortstop Didi Gregorius recovers from Tommy John surgery.Pitching was a priority, and the Yankees tacked to Happ after failing to sign free agent Patrick Corbin.A first-time All-Star Madison Bumgarner Jersey , Happ was acquired from Toronto on July 26 as a summer rental and went 7-0 with a 2.69 ERA in 11 starts for New York. He finished 17-6 with a 3.65 ERA for the season. He lost at Boston in the AL Division Series opener, allowing five runs in two innings — including J.D. Martinez’s three-run homer in the first.“The body of work is maybe more indicative of the type of player you are. I certainly don’t mean to downplay the importance of the playoff game,” Happ said. “J.D. Martinez hit a pitch that not a lot of guys hit.”Happ, a 36-year-old left-hander, gets $17 million in each of the next two seasons. His deal includes a $17 million option for 2021 that could become guaranteed if he has either 27 or more starts as a pitcher in 2020 or 165 or more innings that year. He’s s projected to be part of a rotation that includes Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia. The one newcomer is James Paxton, acquired from Seattle in a Nov. 19 trade.“He’s going to be exciting,” Happ said. “I think New York’s going to fall in love with him.”When asked which teammates impressed him in New York, Happ mentioned Sabathia Juan Marichal Jersey , Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge.“CC Sabathia was a guy that I always wondered about and everybody raves about, and I saw from the other side kind of the competitiveness he brought,” Happ said. “He was everything and more that people talked him up to be, a star as far as a teammate and a person. So it was awesome to get to know him and he sent me a message right away, which I certainly appreciate.”Happ and Judge became travel buddies on flights.“What a great head on that guy’s shoulder,” Happ said. “He’s going to be a superstar for a long time.”Happ also was impressed by players’ attitudes, “just feeling the vibe of that clubhouse and sort of the veteran leadership that it has, as well as a lot of very talented young players who are playing the game the right way and putting in the work and anxious to get better.” Justin Edmonds/Getty ImagesThe Colorado Rockies have not given up on retaining Carlos Gonzalez.Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported the Rockies are among the teams that have reached out to the veteran outfielder.Gonzalez, 33 http://www.giantsfanproshop.com/authentic-evan-longoria-jersey , spent the last decade in Colorado. He was a three-time All-Star and 2010 NL batting champion. Injuries somewhat derailed his trajectory; he's spent extensive time on the disabled list throughout his career.Gonzalez hit .276/.329/.467 with 16 home runs and 64 runs batted in last season. He bounced back to post a 1.7 WAR after an ugly -0.1 mark in 2017, perFanGraphs. The two sides agreed to a one-year, $5 million deal for the 2018 season."Alot of people (were) counting me out six years ago," Gonzalez toldPatrick Saundersof theDenver Postin September. "I'm still showing up. I never think about it. I always think about the opportunity I have in front of me. Just being here is a tremendous opportunity for me."I try to take advantage every night. I try make my family proud. My fans, everybody who supports me every day and this franchise. I've been here for so long. I do it for everybody. That's all I think about."Wherever Gonzalez lands, he'll likely have to be satisfied being part of a platoon at first. The Rockies tapered off his playing time later in the regular season, though he was a fixture in their postseason lineups. His age and mostly middling production of the last two years likely means he's going to have to settle for another short-term contract, whether it's in Colorado or elsewhere.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Outfielder Matt Joyce has reached agreement on a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants following his release by Cleveland. The Giants announced Wednesday the non-roster addition of Joyce Sean Newcomb Jersey , who is 34 and spent the past two seasons across the bay with Oakland. He played in just 83 games last season while dealing with a lingering back injury, batting .208 with seven home runs and 15 RBIs.The Indians signed Carlos Gonzalez to a minor league deal Tuesday, making Joyce expendable. He was released from his minor league contract, making him a free agent.Joyce, a left-handed hitter, had 25 homers and 68 RBIs while batting .243 in 141 games for the Athletics in 2017. He gives manager Bruce Bochy more depth for now in an outfield that is expected to feature Steven Duggar Preston Tucker Jersey , Gerardo Parra and Mac Williamson. Cameron Maybin also joined the Giants on a minor league deal this spring. The Baltimore Orioles continued to sell off assets, sending second baseman Jonathan Schoop to the Milwaukee Brewers just before Tuesday's non-waiver trade deadline.Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was first to report the deal before the Orioles made the official announcement:Baltimore Orioles OriolesThe Orioles have acquired INF Jonathan Villar, RHP Luis Ortiz, and INF Jean Carmona from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for INF Jonathan Schoop. #BirdlandSchoop is in the midst of an up-and-down season, posting a .244 batting average with a .273 on-base percentage plus 17 home runs in 85 games. However, he has been red-hot as of late Zack Greinke Jersey , hitting .360 with nine home runs in the month of July. The 26-year-old is making $8.5 million this season and has one more year of team control before he will hit free agency. While Schoop has been a bit of a disappointment in 2018, he is just one year removed from finishing 12th in MVP voting. He earned his only All-Star selection in 2017, when he hit .293 with 32 home runs and 105 RBI, all career highs. He helps upgrade an infield that was without Villar, who is on the disabled list with a sprained right thumb, though there are now questions about where Schoop http://www.diamondbacksfanproshop.com/authentic-zack-greinke-jersey , Travis Shaw and the newly acquired Mike Moustakas fit in the lineup.Still, the addition upgraded the Brewers offense as the team tries to earn a playoff sport for the first time since 2011.Meanwhile, the Orioles also reportedly dealt pitcher Kevin Gausman has two more years before free agency the Atlanta Braves shortly before the deadline, perJon Heymanof Fancred.Baltimore had already traded pending free agents Manny Machado and Zach Britton, and the last two trades cemented the idea that the organization is in full rebuild mode.Pitcher Luis Ortiz and shortstop Jean Carmona ranked among the Brewers' top 15 prospects, perMLB.com Randy Johnson Jersey , so they could help the Orioles return to prominence within a few years.

Rob Carr/Getty ImagesAs pitchers and catchers are set to report to camp within the next week http://www.angelsfanproshop.com/authentic-zack-cozart-jersey , Bryce Harper and Manny Machado are among the free agents still unsigned this MLB offseason.A big reason why those prized free agents have yet to sign on the dotted line could be their asking price. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported on Friday that both Harper and Machado are seeking $300 million deals, and both players (or perhaps their respective agents) are waiting for the other to sign to set the market.Rosenthal noted that clubs are also willing to wait for the market to play itself out. It's said Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf would rather other teams engage in a bidding war and then decide if his team will join in once the numbers become clearer. Both Harper and Machado have long been expected to challenge Giancarlo Stanton's record $325 million  somewhere in that seven-year, eight-year range for $220 million."ESPN'sBuster Olneyreported in January that the White Sox had offered Machado a seven-year, $175 million deal. Machado's agent, Dan Lozano Chris Young Jersey ,vehemently shotthat report down.Harper hit .249/.393/.496 with 34 home runs, 34 doubles and 100 RBI in 2018, ending his contract year on a high note by hitting.300 after the All-Star break. The 26-year-old has earned no shortage of accolades throughout his career:six All-Star selections, 2012 NL Rookie of the Year, 2015 NL MVP, 2015 NL Silver Slugger and 2018 Home Run Derby title.Meanwhile, Machado hit .297/.367/.538 with 37 home runs Cam Bedrosian Jersey , 35 doubles, three triples and 107 RBI in 162 games between theBaltimore Orioles and the Los Angeles Dodgers last year. After establishing himself among the best defensive third basemen in baseball with a pair of Gold Gloves, he moved over to shortstop full-time last season. His questionable postseason antics and "Johnny Hustle" comments have seemingly hurt his value as teams are wary of signing him to a long-term deal.Despite their impressive resumes, neither has appeared close to signing at any point so far this offseason. But with spring training right around corner, the action could soon heat up.The White Sox, the Philadelphia Phillies and the San Diego Padres are among the teams to show interest in both stars, while the San Francisco Giants reportedly joined the Harper sweepstakes this past week.Perhaps the Phillies' acquisition of star catcher J.T. Realmuto on Thursday could lead them to be more aggressive in their self-proclaimed "stupid money" spending.Jon Paul Morosiof MLB.com cautioned http://www.angelsfanproshop.com/authentic-zack-cozart-jersey , though, that the Realmuto trade does not mean a Harper or Machado signing is imminent. But as Morosi pointed out, Philadelphia made itself a more attractive destination by adding an All-Star to its roster this week. It's not surprising that the Cubs are being backed by the public against the Pirates tonight.Even though Chicago is getting the majority of the bets, the Pirates' odds have shortened by 20 cents.Betting Odds: Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh PiratesCubs (Jon Lester): -104Pirates (Jameson Tallion): -106Over/under: 7.5First pitch: 7:05 p.m. ET>> Download The Action Network App to get real-time MLB odds, track your bets and follow all of our experts’ picks. There’s a lot to unpack here so bear with me.Let’s start with the obvious. The Cubs have a better record than the Pirates, and this line is essentially a pick’em. Right off the bat, that should indicate that oddsmakers are attempting to take advantage of public perception. On a similar note Blake Parker Jersey , the Cubs made the playoffs last season; the Pirates didn’t. Public bettors have that ingrained in their minds, and oddsmakers know it. They’re going to shade lines to account for it.Orioles-Yankees Betting Preview: 3 Reasons to Bet an Unpopular UnderdogRead nowThe Pirates are also the home side in this one. That’s the type of factor that the public tends to consider only when it benefits them — at least in baseball — which means they’re completely overlooking any edge the Pirates might have from playing in Pittsburgh tonight. As for the betting market, the Pirates are getting fewer than 40% of bets, and have seen considerable line movement in their direction going from +114 to -106 at Pinnacle. That’s especially noteworthy considering the range in which this moneyline stands. It’s a 20-cent line move, but it corresponds to a win probability change of 5% (that’s a lot). And finally, this game is on pace to be the most heavily bet game tonight, so you can be sure that oddsmakers care about this outcome. They’re well-aware that the public will love the Cubs in this case and they’re happy about that. Why? Well http://www.angelsfanproshop.com/authentic-zack-cozart-jersey , putting the above filters together creates a system that’s gone 42-14 since 2005, winning 26.4 units for  return on investment. The pick: Pirates (-106)

The New York Yankees still haven’t announced who will start the American League wild-card game against the Oakland A’s next Wednesday. But Thursday Neil Walker Jersey , before a 12-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays reduced their magic number for clinching home field for the game to one, the Yankees did announce their rotation for the weekend regular-season finale in Boston. It sure looks like J.A. Happ will be the wild-card starter.Article continues below ...The left-hander, 6-0 with a 2.18 ERA in nine starts with New York, opens the Fenway Park series against Rick Porcello. Lance Lynn goes Saturday and Luis Severino on Sunday. That would leave Happ on his regular rest for the wild card, but Severino will have just two days’ rest.Happ has pitched well in his career against Boston, leading to speculation that Happ would be saved for the Red Sox. But manager Aaron Boone said the focus is on Oakland, regardless of where the game is played.“No,” Boone said. “I would say we’re going to pour everything kind of into the wild-card game and what we think will give us the best chance.”Masahiro Tanaka apparently took himself out of consideration with two straight bad starts. Severino, who had been the ace, recovered some from his recent struggles but doesn’t appear to be all the way back. That leaves Happ, who is 16-6 with a 3.57 ERA overall with Toronto and New York and should be rewarded — quite possible by the Yankees — with a free agent contract this winter. He is 7-4 with a 2.82 career ERA against the Red Sox, 4-2 with a 2.91 ERA at Fenway Park. He would be in line for only one ALDS start — Game 3, which would be in New York.Happ has pitched three times, in three different stadiums, against Boston this season, going 0-1 with two good starts and one shaky. He has 22 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings against the Red Sox.Porcello, 17-7 with a 4.33 ERA, is 2-0 with a 2.53 ERA this year against the Yankees — 10-8 with a 3.16 ERA this season. He has had one bad start against New York this season, but his other two have been gems — one run and three hits in 16 innings with 15 strikeouts. The Yankees expect to have Aaron Hicks (hamstring) back in the lineup Friday night and may well get Didi Gregorius back this weekend. The Red Sox have some bad numbers against Happ, but former teammate and close friend Steve Pearce is 10-for-29 (.345) with five home runs against his buddy. Brandon Phillips is 8-for-29 (.348) with three homers, and two of Ian Kinsler’s seven hits have been home runs. But Andrew Benintendi is 0-for-15, Sandy Leon 1-for-10 (.100) Adrian Gonzalez Jersey , Jackie Bradley Jr. 3-for-20 (.150), Xander Bogaerts 5-for-29 (.172), Mookie Betts 6-for-32 (,188) with a homer, Rafael Devers 2-for-9 (.222) and J.D. Martinez 4-for-17 (.235).The Yankees have dreadful numbers against Porcello, hitting a cumulative .214 (60-for-81) but with 13 homers. Neil Walker is 1-for-14 (.071), Greg Bird 1-for-12 (.083), Andrew McCutcheon 1-for-10 (.100), Austin Romine 1-for-9 (.111), Hicks 4-for-31 (.129) with two homers, Gary Sanchez 2-for-13 (.154), Ronald Torreyes 2-for-12 (.167) and Adeiny Hechavarria 4-for-22 (.182).The Red Sox, who will open the ALDS at home next Friday and Saturday, have already broken the club record for wins in a season and, after an off-day Thursday, come into this game at 107-52.Chris Sale, who will pitch Game 1, took the loss in Wednesday night’s second game of a day/night double-header at Fenway.“Obviously I’m not where I want to be,” he said after working 4 2/3 innings, his velocity down.“Not great, we saw that,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “Velocity wasn’t great. The slider Jose Bautista Jersey , the two (players) that he hit, but then after that he had a few swings and misses. The changeup was OK.”The Yankees hit four homers, two by Giancarlo Stanton, and CC Sabathia notched his 246th career win Thursday. But the victory was costly for Sabathia, who was ejected in the sixth inning for throwing at Jesus Sucre. The ejection left him two innings shy of the 155 he needed for a $500,000 bonus.“I don’t really make decisions based on money, I guess,” said Sabathia, who would likely start a Game 4 of the ALDS. “I just felt like it was the right thing to do.” ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Dodgers got some help from a former Cardinal before their pivotal series against St. Louis.David Freese, who joined Los Angeles in a trade with the Pirates at the end of August, offered some insight on the Cardinals‘ young pitchers during the Dodgers’ hitters meeting. The advice paid off.Manny Machado homered and drove in three runs to back Clayton Kershaw, and the Dodgers beat the Cardinals 9-7 in the opener of a four-game series between playoff contenders.“Just better approaches,” Machado said. “Keep it simple. See the ball, hit the ball. The guy’s going to have to throw it over the plate and when we make good contact and when we’re at our best, we’re not going to miss those opportunities.”The Dodgers snapped a five-game losing streak against the Cardinals and moved to within one game of St. Louis for the final NL wild-card spot. The Cardinals, who went 22-6 in August, lost their second straight game and fell to 5-7 in September.Kershaw (8-5), pitching at Busch Stadium for the first time since taking the loss in Game 4 of the 2014 NL division series, struck out eight in six innings, allowing four runs — three earned — on eight hits and two walks.“I felt good tonight,” Kershaw said. “My curveball wasn’t great but my other two (pitches) I felt like I had good command tonight.”Freese tripled on a 14-pitch at-bat against Austin Gomber to score Chris Taylor and Machado in the first. Matt Kemp followed with a single to score Freese.“I threw him everything I had,” Gomber said. “I went back and looked at the video. I thought the first 13 pitches were good pitches and the 14th one wasn’t. He made me pay. Kind of just how the night went. They put some swings on pitches that I thought were good pitches.”Kershaw’s RBI single started a four-run fourth and drove Gomber (5-1) from the game. Taylor followed with an RBI double http://www.metsfanproshop.com/authentic-tim-tebow-jersey , and Justin Turner and Machado had sacrifice flies as the Dodgers went ahead 8-1.Machado went 3 for 4, and his solo homer in the seventh traveled 417 feet to center.“We did what we needed to do,” Machado said. “We got runners in scoring position. We got the runners in. Hopefully we can repeat it.”It was Gomber’s first loss in the majors. The rookie left-hander went three-plus innings and gave up a career-high seven runs on nine hits.“You saw us fighting and winning pitches,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “We have a lineup that can kind of grind starters and get a big hit and use the whole field.”Cardinals reliever Tyson Ross hit his second career home run in the fifth, sparking a three-run rally. He became the fourth Cardinals pitcher to homer this season, the most the team has had since 1966.Matt Carpenter had a pair of singles and scored twice. Marcell Ozuna had two hits, an RBI and scored a run.“I’m really proud of the guys tonight,” Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said. “They one-through-nine battled to the end. That’s what this team does.”The Cardinals scored twice and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth. Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen needed 29 pitches to finish the game in a non-save situation.“It got a little nerve-wracking there,” Roberts said. “Obviously he’s our guy, but he wasn’t sharp tonight and he found a way to close it out for us.”FAN-TASTICThe attendance was announced at 40,997, putting the Cardinals over the 3 million mark for the 15 straight season and 22nd overall.TRAINER’S ROOMDodgers: RHP Ross Stripling will move back into the rotation for Sunday’s game, moving LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu back to Monday and LHP Alex Wood to the bullpen.Cardinals: C Yadier Molina (left hamstring tightness) returned to the starting lineup after missing six games. He went 0 for 1 with a walk before leaving the game after the fourth inning with St. Louis trailing by seven. “He feels like he can catch without any issue, and clearly he’ll be a little compromised on the bases,” Shildt said. “It’s something that we’ll sacrifice him scoring maybe a run, of course clearly we might pinch-run for him late in the game if it’s applicable.”UP NEXTThe Cardinals send RHP Jack Flaherty (8-6, 2.92 ERA) to the mound Friday night. The Dodgers will counter with RHP Walker Buehler (6-5, 3.09) in a rematch of a duel between the rookies in a 3-1 Cardinals win at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 22. Flaherty struck out 10 in that game, giving up one hit (a solo homer by Joc Pederson) in six innings, while Buehler allowed three hits and struck out nine over seven scoreless innings.

After a disappointing season http://www.pittsburghsteelersteamstore.com/joe-haden-jersey , it should come as no surprise to note that the Pittsburgh Steelers were not particularly well represented on the AP All-Pro teams announced on Friday. A year removed from seeing four players voted as first-team All-Pro selections and one as a second-team selection, Maurkice Pouncey is the only player to receive the honor this year as part of the AP All-Pro second-team. Voted for by a panel of 50 sports writers, Peter King highlighted just how flawed the voting process can be when he made a big show out of his decision to remove Antonio Brown from his ballot as a response to him missing the Steelers Week 17 game.Perhaps the most notable slight for Pittsburgh this year is the exclusion of David DeCastro. Named first-team All-Pro in 2018, it is hard to see how his play declined this season given hedid not allow a single sack in any of the 958 snaps he played in. It says a lot about the voting process that DeCastro’s votes this year were split between left and right guard, despite not playing even one snap at left guard all year.It would also appear that Brown has taken issue with his exclusion this year, although I personally have no idea what he is trying to say with his latest tweet. A few years back Kevin Colbert put forth an idea that the BTSC draftniks have adopted as a sort of gospel truth. Paraphrasing, it goes like this:We organize each year’s BTSC Big Board on that general idea. The “Colbert Specials” go at the top regardless of position and without much of a discount. Everyone else gets dropped to the extent that Pittsburgh has no need for a player at that position. So - who are the Colbert Specials in this year’s class, and who are the clear 1st rounders that could arguably get promoted? At this point I have studied somewhere around a dozen public Boards in the process of compiling an initial BTSC Big Board, which will appear after a series of articles addressing the team’s wants and needs. The following players are those who regularly appear in the Top 10 of those all-players-for-all-teams lists:DL Ed Oliver, Houston. 6’2”, 290 lbs. Constantly compared to HOF players like Warren Sapp or future ones like Aaron Donald. On 100% of the lists.DL Quinnen Williams, Alabama. 6’3”, 285 lbs. Constantly compared to HOF players like Warren Sapp or future ones like Aaron Donald. On 100% of the lists.DL Jeffery Simmons, Miss. St. 6’4”, 300 lbs. The strongest Defensive Lineman in the draft, he’d likely be the top dog in most other classes. On around 80%-90% of the lists.EDGE Nick Bosa, Ohio St. 6’3”, 270 lbs. On 100% of the lists Authentic Chris Boswell Jersey , usually at #1 overall.CB Greedy Williams, LSU. 6’1”, 182 lbs. The best Corner in the draft. On 100% of the lists. Those five ARE Colbert Specials. Period, end of story. Write them off your wish list because it Ain’t Gonna Happen. Here’s the next tier:MACK ILB Devin White, LSU. 6’1”, 255 lbs. Monstrous ceiling based on athletic potential and a proper linebacker’s mindset, but also very raw and sometimes indecisive. On around 80% of the lists. SS/FS Deionte Thompson, Alabama. 6’2”, 196 lbs. The consensus #1 Safety in the draft. On around 70% of the lists.EDGE/BUCK ILB Josh Allen, Kentucky. 6’4”, 258 lbs. Remember the debates about LVE in 2018? Get ready for a repeat except this guy has big time Edge rushing talent as well. On around 60% of the lists but with more buzz than almost anyone. For my money those three are also Colbert Specials, bringing the total up to eight (8). I will mourn as they get picked in that 5-12 range before the Steelers could legitimately hope to trade up. Pessimistic? Me? Never. I’m going to dream about them even if I’m doomed to despair. The next group includes five (5) players that any serious film watcher could fall in love with and defend for Special status.DL Raekwon Davis, Alabama. 6’7”, 316 lbs. What Stephon Tuitt would have been as a prospect if he’d been fully healthy. On around 40%-50% of the lists.DL/EDGE Rashan Gary, Michigan. 6’5”, 283 lbs. Described by our own Nick Farabaugh as a combination of a bigger T.J. Watt and a smaller Stephon Tuitt but just as raw as either one. On around 40%-50% of the lists.EDGE Clelin Ferrell (“Furl”), Clemson. 6’5”, 260 lbs. On around 40%-50% of the lists.EDGE Jachai Polite http://www.pittsburghsteelersteamstore.com/terrell-edmunds-jersey , Florida. 6’2”, 240 lbs. On around 40%-50% of the lists.OL/TACKLE Jonah Williams, Alabama. 6’5”, 301 lbs. The safest and probably the best tackle in the class. On 40-50% of the lists. Two more D-Linemen (!), a 4-3 Edge with play in space ability, and a single offensive player who barely made the list. After that comes the Honorable Mention names who appeared 2-3 times in my research (there were another 5-10 who got mentioned only once, for what it’s worth). These include:DL Derrick Brown, Auburn. 6’4”, 316 lbs.DL Christian Wilkins, Clemson. 6’4”, 315 lbs.CB Byron Murphy, Washington. 6’0”, 175 lbs. Here are the totals out of 16 players in all:DL = 7 names, which explains why this class is already earning adjectives like “legendary”. Of course it could also be due to the four or five others that would be late- or fringe 1st rounders in any other year...Edge = 4 names, two of which fit a 4-3 better than a 3-4.CB = 2 names, one all the way at the top and the other marginal.ILB = 2 names, one a Mack and the other a freaky Edge/Buck hybridSafety = 1 nameOL = 1 nameWhat does this mean for Steeler fans? Not much in any direct sense. It’s mostly useful as a gauge for how the draft is likely to go in the 19 picks before Pittsburgh goes on the clock. First, it’s abundantly clear that this class is enormously top heavy on the defensive side Authentic Alejandro Villanueva Jersey , with an astonishing cluster of Defensive Tackles. Given the game’s recent emphasis on interior pressure it’s safe to assume that at least six of those seven will go in the Top 20. That leaves a lot of room for Pittsburgh fans, who have no need at DT, to hope for some other almost-Special to drop.Second, Steeler Nation is laser focused on the CB position but that could easily be outweighed by a BPA bargain. The only true Colbert Special is Greedy Williams and he will be looooong gone before the Steelers could even hope to trade up. When the clock rolls around toward 1:20 there are likely to be talents on the Board who are superior to the next cluster of CB’s (which our draft Board has in the 1:20 to 2:12 range FWIW).Third, the fans’ secondary focus has been on ILB. There is one player similar to Shazier (Devin White) and another who seems like a better version of Leighton Vander Esch with serious Edge Rushing chops (Josh Allen). Both men would be transformative dream picks if either came in range, and maybe worth trading up to get. The #3 ILB is Alabama’s Mack Wilson, who didn’t appear on any Top 10 lists I saw but made it onto a lot of the Top 20’s. That suggests he would be a very realistic target to hope for.Next, the Edge class could be another place where Colbert & Co. choose to go. Both Josh Allen and Jachai Polite would fit Pittsburgh to a tee, and two Edge prospects (Brian Burns and Montez Sweat) would fit just as well and appeared on at least half of the Top 20 collections. And finally, the big reaches are going to come from teams desperate for an infusion on offense. History suggests at least one or two more OL’s, at least one or two QB’s, and probably a WR or two. Let’s estimate... five (5?) offensive players in the top 19. Pittsburgh will focus on the defensive side of the ball, and it is a very defense-heavy draft. According to my speculative math that means our worst case scenario is getting a Corner who offers fair value but no real bargain. Names like Byron Murphy and Deandre Baker are leading out of the gate but they’re only a nose ahead of Amani Oruwariye, Julian Love, Kris Boyd, and 2-3 others. The best case scenario is someone you could honestly believe is a Colbert Special in Round 1 (see the list above) followed by a Round 2 trade up to obtain one of those worst-case scenario Corners.I may be doomed to disappointment but I’m going to dream! And it’s going to be fun regardless. Custom New Orleans Saints Jerseys

With the noise coming out of the Steel City louder than ever since season’s end Black Artie Burns Jersey , everybody has an opinion about the most talked-about NFL team not to make the playoffs. But what is to be believed? BTSC takes five bold statements regarding the Pittsburgh Steelers and shares their thoughts and opinions whether or not they’re fact or fiction.Mike Tomlin will resist hiring a coach to preside over replays and clock managementFictionArt II Is offering assistance to Tomlin for what is perceived to be his biggest weakness. Most coaches would let pride get in the way and say “Thanks, but no thanks”. But when the fan base is calling for your head, you follow the owner’s suggestion. Tomlin is smart and realizes that other teams have that exact position, so delegation is not a bad thing. Coach T will take the lifeline.Teams will target both Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell to join them in 2019FactTeams with tons of cap room and not intimately familiar with the divisiveness and less-than-selfless demeanors that accompany the mega talent that this pairing promises to offer, it may be a tough task to actually execute. I would think that the Steelers would hesitate to deal AB to an AFC team that could afford this like the New York Jets. Plus teams that could afford it have found solutions to their RB dilemma like the Browns have with Nick Chubb and the Colts have with Marlon Mack. The pairing could happen. It is unlikely, but franchises will consider it.The upcoming season will be Keith Butler’s last in PittsburghFactAfter the terrible collapse of the defense again in 2018, many a scalp in Steeler Nation has been scratched raw on why Butler remains at the Defensive Coordinator position. The best guess is that Butler’s contract runs out after next season and that they’d rather audition a possible successor like Teryl Austin than fire Butler outright. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the logic here. But all signs point to the end of the road for Butler after 2019.The loss of Mike Munchak to Denver will be devastating to the Offensive LineFictionSteeler Nation was elated when news broke that Vic Fangio won the Bronco’s job over Steeler OL coach Mike Munchak. However, Munch left in a lateral move to Denver a few days later Black Joe Haden Jersey , causing Steeler Nation to “the Sky is falling” mode. However, enter Shaun Sarrett who has been working with Munchak since 2014 and the team since 2012. Sarrett’s resum茅 may be unknown to Steeler fans, but to those in the know...the feeling is that the excellence of a line featuring three Pro Bowlers will continue under Sarrett. Gravity remains. The Steelers will welcome Ramon Foster back in 2019FactPreviously, I was certain that the Steelers would let “The Big Ragu” walk after his contract ran out. But after coming off of another solid season, with Marcus Gilbert’s injury woes continuing and Mike Munchak’s departure...It looks like No. 73 could return at a team friendly deal to help continue to be a vital link on a strong chain....How accurate will our opinions prove to be? To copy the sentiment of Antonio Brown...We will find out soon. The first quarter of the Steelers’ 2018 season was rough. Thankfully, the second quarter yielded a perfect record to top the 1-2-1 start. So as I am tasked to break out the red pen and evaluate the season’s second quarter, I no longer do it from the ledge. As I’ve stated all along, I’m not a football coach or a teacher Youth Ben Roethlisberger Jersey , but I play one in blogs and podcasts. Each week of the 2018 exhibition and regular season, I’ve graded the efforts of the Black-and-gold via “the eye test”. Grading games is an extremely difficult and somewhat thankless task. While the coaches’ grades, of course, are what count the most, the media and fans can’t help but evaluate as well. So you, the reader, get to vote as well. You even get to grade the grader in the comments section. So let’s take a look at BTSC’s perceptions of the 2018 season’s second quarter:OffenseThe Steelers’ offense is ranked fourth in the league with 415.2 ypg and ninth with a 28.4 points per game (ppg) average through eight contests. In 2017, they scored at a rate of 26.4 ppg. After an inconsistent start Youth JuJu Smith-Schuster Jersey , Randy Fichtner’s unit has resembled the juggernaut that they’ve promised to be. Ben Roethlisberger was the league’s passing leader through the first quarter (1,414 yards/353.5 yards per game), but his average has dropped 9 ypg. Despite that, he was a much better quarterback in the second quarter. He admittedly was not on the same page with everybody and now seems to be. By spreading the ball around to a myriad of guys (Antonio Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Ryan Switzer, Vance McDonald, Jesse James and James Conner) and no longer forcing it to AB Black Bud Dupree Jersey , he has thrived. Ben’s offensive line wasn’t reminiscent of the high-caliber unit of past years in the first quarter, but now is playing like an elite squad. Injuries have hampered Marcus Gilbert, but Matt Feiler has filled in tremendously at RT. The remaining four of Ramon Foster, Dave DeCastro, Alejandro Villanueva and Maurkice Pouncey have been dominating oncoming defenders, protecting Ben (2 sacks allowed in the second quarter of 2018 and 11 overall) and opening gaping holes for James Conner. Mike Munchak’s guys are close to being the class of the league.Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY SportsLe’Veon Bell has been missed less and less with James Conner’s emergence as an elite back in the league with nine rushing TDs and another on a reception. No. 30’s 706 rushing yards on the ground ranks him second in the league and his 379 yards as a receiver puts him on track for a better output than Bell in 2017. His penchant for picking up the blitz no longer creates concern. Conner has done well, making Bell a likely backup upon his possible return.Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY SportsAntonio Brown is not having the receptions and yardage season that he’s accustomed to. But his nine receiving TDs leads the NFL and is only four behind his career high in 2014. Double-teaming AB has forced balls to go in other directions, mostly to JuJu Smith-Schuster. JuJu (13th in the league) leads the team with 53 catches for 672 yards versus Antonio’s 51 for 594 (T-14th). The disconnect between Ben and AB has lessened with No. 84 seemingly accepting that Ben can’t continue to force the ball into him. The deep threat that Martavis Bryant provided hasn’t yet been replicated yet Youth Chukwuma Okorafor Jersey , as Justin Hunter and James Washington haven’t seized the WR3 role. However, the rookie seems to be getting looks again.Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY SportsThe TE duo of Jesse James (336 yards on 21 catches) and Vance McDonald (346 yards on 26 catches) has been very solid. As a unit, they’ve got a combined 47 grabs on 61 targets and their yards-after-catch have been remarkable — a combined 368. Vanimal is ranked 25th in the league with 234, while Jesse registers in at 83rd with 134.Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty ImagesOverall Offense Grade: AThe offense has found their identity. AB is scoring touchdowns and Ben is no longer trying to appease him. Conner is playing at an elite level, behind an elite line. Vance and Jesse James take turns being valuable and JuJu is a joy joy.Offensive Valedictorian: James Conner Custom Cleveland Browns Jerseys

I was no fan of the Alex Smith trade and I still am not. I thought the trade was horrible. When news of Smith’s trade to the Redskins started to leak and word of his new contract along with the news that Kendall Fuller would no longer be a Redskin here were some of my reactions:I even had this gem The women in my life have told me about being loud and wrong. Alex Smith is not making more guaranteed money than any other QB in the NFL but he is still getting paid a pretty penny. Smith’s is guaranteed 55 million dollars as a part of his new deal which makes it virtually impossible to move on from him before a couple of seasons pass. Alex Smith is 34 and is not going to get better beyond what we know his baseline of play is.Alex Smith’s career year last season was an anomaly. Andy Reid sold stock at the right time. I will not deny this is a damned if you do damned if you don’t situation for the Redskins. Kirk Cousins was gone. Colt McCoy is not a starter. The Redskins had no plans to move up in the draft and the free agent options consisted of A.J. McCarron and Case Keenum. Smith was available so they went for it. Of course they did but for God’s sake 55 million AND Kendall Fuller AND a third round pick? We don’t pay $8.99 / lb for overripe bananas folks. You shop for value and you only pay for premium and rare ingredients. Smith is not that. Aside from bananas it makes me think about locksmiths. You have lost your key (starting QB) and you need to get back into your place (be competitive and win). Your particular key is your sole resource (QBs run the offense) you do not have a stash of hidden keys nearby (You have not properly prepared to get a new QB). You call a locksmith (NFL teams) because there is no way you are breaking into your own place (field a team with no viable QB at all) and the one locksmith that is still open at 10pm (the team that is willing to trade) charges you $250 dollars to open your door because they know you basically have no other option and they are giving you a premium specialized service. I hope ya’ll followed that but here is my point. The Redskins got taken for a ride and paid full price and currently aren’t getting the value out of Smith that they paid for. I don’t think Alex Smith is a bad QB. I think he is decent but to fact of the matter to me is he is not going to get much better than he is now. We have too much on tape and paper to objectively say otherwise. Alex Smith is not playing well as a Redskin right now and it is almost halfway through the season. He may play better but the results and production will likely be marginal. I was floored by people who said it looked like he was getting more comfortable. It looked the exact opposite to me this past Sunday. Smith clearly is not comfortable in this offense or with its options. We can and do talk for hours about the quality of this team. The coach has said it best and has set the expectation for the season and for the play of this team. The team is built and they have to win right now. To me right now means RIGHT NOW like this season and at the latest next season. Alex is not Benjamin Button either and I know some of you all enjoyed that picture of him running on the ocean floor with a rock but that exercise did not improve his straight line speed or arm accuracy. But guess what? The team IS built to win now. Through a series of fortunate events this team HAS planned and lucked into some key players who are carrying this team. They ran into an ageless Adrian Peterson they have been building the defense for a few years now and those elements are carrying the team. The law of gravity applies here though and what comes up must come down. The team is not playing in a sustainable way. The team has great pieces but what if Adrian Peterson can’t play? What if one of the Bama boys gets hurt? What if the defense simply has a bad game? Who will be left to carry the team? It certainly won’t be Smith that that is what’s scary and disappointing. We can not count on our QB to play from behind. We can’t count on our QB to put the team on his back. We can’t count on our QB to make that special throw. Smith is going to compete with very few QBs in a shootout situation. You need that in the NFL to make it all the way. The Redskins don’t have it. Before you invoke Trent Dilfer or the 2017 Jaguars I will remind you it is neither 1999 (they cant even fall on guys anymore) and the Jaguars lost in the AFC title game and did not go all the way. The irony in all of this was I looked at Smith’s numbers and despite the eye test Smith is actually on pace for another Pro Bowl season. If Smith continues his current production he will finish the season with 3 Cheap Josh Norman Jersey ,688 passing yards, 18.6 TDs, 5.3 INTs, and a 62% completion rating. What is funny is if I see this guy run out of bounds on 3rd down during a close game in the 4th quarter with 200 passing yards under his belt I might blow a gasket and yet the team is winning. The bit of good news is like getting a warm pitcher of Corona at happy hour. You’ll take it but you know it isnt good for you in the long run and in the grand scheme of things. What often happens in the comments section is people will revert to the ‘why can’t you enjoy it’ argument. The team won. Shut up be happy. My friends accepting mediocrity in the face of defeat OR victory is something I can not do. There are times I watch this team play and I feel ill. I must point out where the team can do better because I love my Skins. My QB does not need to throw from 450 yards and 4 TDs for me to be happy. But I expect him to not look borderline incompetent at times, I expect him to hit open receivers, I expect him to under stand game situations, I expect him to see open receivers. These are all familiar criticisms of past Redskin starting QBs so I think I’m being pretty fair. Unfortunately I don’t expect Smith to have some sort of epiphany and but it all together next week or this season. The Redskins are first in the division that is lit AF. They are in control of their own destiny. We know there are going to be a lot of challenges. We know there are going to be tough moments where the team has to play from behind. The team will have to lift each other up and pick up the slack when things are going well for one aspect of it. The defense has proven it can do it. Now the question is can and will the offense do it for the defense when we need it most? The team may have payed $8.99/ lb for overripe bananas or payed $250 to get into their own apartment will there be times this season where the expense will finally seem worth it? I won’t hold my breath. The Super Bowl is over and we know the draft order for the 1st round and it’s time for a new round of mock drafts! We are still less than 3 weeks away from the NFL Scouting Combine and 11 weeks away from the start of the NFL draft. Most people have the Redskins taking a QB this year Cheap Derrius Guice Jersey , and some even have them trading up for one. Alex Smith is likely to miss the 2019 season, and is possibly done playing in the NFL(Don’t tell Bruce Allen that, he’ll deny anything). This is arguably a weak class for QBs, especially if you are picking in the middle of the 1st round(#15) like the Redskins will be this year. There are several potentially QB-needy teams ahead of the Redskins this year(Giants, Jaguars, Broncos, Raiders Cheap Da'Ron Payne Jersey , Dolphins), which could cause a QB run on this year’s Ponder/Locker/Gabbert collection of QBs. It’s lying season and there are plenty of rumors flying around about which QBs Washington likes.Should the Redskins draft a QB in the 1st round? Should they even consider trading up for any of this year’s QBs?
